Customer story · IT and telecom services · Sweden

Nightly backups ten times faster, on a VMware cluster that could finally grow.

A Swedish IT and telecom services provider replaced ageing legacy storage with an AiRE 3122 as primary storage for a new VMware cluster.

The challenge

Ageing legacy infrastructure was throttling nightly backups and could not scale with the business.

The solution

An AiRE 3122 became the primary storage for a new VMware cluster, with automated I/O path management, application profile recognition and data reduction, acquired through FlexiPay.

The situation

WE2U delivers IT and telecom services to Swedish businesses, which means its own infrastructure is the product. The storage behind its virtualised estate had aged into the constraint: nightly backup windows were stretching, and adding capacity to the legacy platform meant another forklift rather than another shelf.

The requirement was a primary storage platform for a new VMware cluster that would take the backup window back under control, reduce the capacity the estate consumed, and do so on an operating-expense model rather than a capital purchase.

What was deployed

An AiRE IntelligentFiler 3122 was installed as the primary storage for the new VMware cluster. The platform's automated I/O path management and application profile recognition meant the data sets were tuned for the virtual machine workload without manual LUN engineering, and inline data reduction was enabled from the start.

The system was acquired through FlexiPay, STORViX's subscription programme, so the hardware, software and support run as a monthly cost rather than an upfront investment.

What changed

Nightly backups completed ten times faster than on the legacy platform. The production data set compressed by a factor of three, cutting the capacity the cluster consumed, and the monthly cost of the storage estate fell by up to 60 per cent against what WE2U had been paying.

Results

What was measured afterwards

  • Nightly backups 10× faster than the previous legacy solution
  • 3× compression factor, cutting capacity utilisation
  • Up to 60% lower monthly cost

Agile storage: from terabytes to petabytes in seconds.

The Department of Plant Biotechnology and Bioinformatics at Ghent University needed to archive simulation data that must outlast the research, on storage its scientists could grow themselves.

    • Scales from a few terabytes to petabytes in seconds, with no RAID rebuild to wait for
    • Researchers provision file systems themselves, without IT expertise
    • Up and running with no manual, no training and no support call
