The problem

Storage islands are where the money goes.

Footage, projects and masters accumulate on whatever was bought for the job at the time. Each island has its own capacity ceiling, its own backup arrangement and its own refresh date, and none of them were planned together.

Growth in content then turns into manual migration. Someone decides what moves off the fast tier and when, and that decision is made under deadline by whoever is available. The operational cost hides in exactly that judgement.

The consequence shows up on the worst possible day. A disruption becomes a time-critical search for which copy of an asset is the good one — across systems that describe themselves differently.

NFS and SMB for file, Fibre Channel and iSCSI for block — concurrently, from the same unit. The tools above change at every stage; this layer does not.

What a sizing conversation needs

Media estates differ enough that a generic configuration is rarely the right one.

Bring the shape of the work rather than a capacity number: how many concurrent edit streams and at what resolution, whether transcode runs on the same infrastructure, what the playout chain will not tolerate, and how long masters must be kept.

Those four answers drive the disk pack, tiering and protection topology choices much more than total capacity alone. A brief sizing session is faster than trading spec sheets — and it delivers an accurate configuration instead of a quote for the wrong setup.
