The challenge
Teams sharing files across centralised databases, customer backup copies that had to be stored securely yet stay accessible for tests, and file-control work that ate the time Alma Pro wanted to spend on customer-facing operations.
The solution
An AiRE IntelligentFiler 3124 consolidating SQL Server, Veeam backup and CIFS file services into one system, with block-level incremental snapshots and space-free clones for the database copies used in testing.
Alma Pro works in teams with different areas of expertise, and team members share files and documents in multiple centralised databases every day, so the company sought better storage reduction for its long-term operation. The IT and development teams are also responsible for backing up customers' virtualised infrastructure by saving copies of data on shared repositories. Because those backup copies are often used for internal tests and simulations, they must be checked and stored completely securely.
The internal IT teams manage the services offered to customers, so the teams on each project must constantly verify that the copies derived from backups are protected and stored securely, yet easily accessible when needed. File-control tasks such as checking the validity of customer backups take time and effort, and when the development team spends a long time creating a database copy, the IT team is often left without enough time to build and verify backups.
With external IT operations for customers as the priority, Alma Pro's teams lacked time for internal improvements. Internal operations had to run smoothly and quickly so that more time could go to customer-facing work, and that required a more modern and agile solution.
STORViX helped Alma Pro consolidate and optimise the storage layer for its entire IT infrastructure by installing an AiRE IntelligentFiler model 3124. The platform provides continuous protection from corruption, disasters and breaches, and keeps performance optimal by automating I/O path management, application profile recognition and data reduction.
Where Alma Pro previously ran five services on three workloads in two systems, AiRE IntelligentFiler consolidated all of it into one easy-to-use system. The three workloads are a Microsoft SQL Server, Veeam backup software and CIFS file services, each with the best optimisation for its workload and with protection from ransomware and viruses by default.
AiRE gave the IT teams rock-solid procedures for keeping things running without having to plan operations for internal systems. Everything is managed with greater agility and ease than on the previous legacy system, which frees time for the value-adding external IT operations and brought substantial improvements in operational efficiency.
AiRE also unlocked more agile ways to manage data and database copies. With the block-level incremental snapshot system and the ability to clone file systems without consuming useful space, the development team built more efficient processes for the database copies used in testing and simulation, reducing storage utilisation by more than 90 percent. The IT team no longer manages different types of storage, because AiRE merged the workloads into a single solution, and integrated data protection reduced the time spent operating the system by 65% compared with traditional archiving and backup systems.
