STORViX AiRE and NetApp

NetApp is the reference point in enterprise unified storage, and for good reason: ONTAP has the deepest feature set, the widest integration coverage and the largest available skills pool of any platform on this page. NetApp was named a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Storage Platforms and ranked first for hybrid cloud storage in the corresponding Critical Capabilities report. Any comparison that does not start there is not a serious comparison. The question for a buyer is not whether ONTAP is capable — it is — but whether its strengths are the ones your estate needs, and what you are paying for the ones it does not.

The honest version

When each is the better choice.

Presented with equal weight, because a buyer who has already spoken to the other vendor will notice if it is not.

When STORViX is the better fit

  • Hardware lifecycle is a material line in the business case, and a 7–10 year service life against a conventional refresh cadence changes the whole-life cost comparison.
  • You are consolidating unlike workloads and want each to hold its own block size, encryption and reduction settings rather than accepting an array-wide configuration.
  • Supplier jurisdiction is itself a procurement criterion — STORViX AB is a Swedish company with Vault replicas in named EU countries.
  • The infrastructure team is small, and autonomous operation matters more than the depth of a feature catalogue nobody has time to use.
  • The estate fits comfortably inside a scale-up envelope of up to 20 PiB per cabinet.

When NetApp is the better fit

  • You already have ONTAP expertise in the team. Existing skills are usually the single largest determinant of time to value, and this is a genuine and often decisive advantage.
  • You need deep first-party integration with AWS, Azure and Google Cloud. NetApp's cloud partnerships go further than any other vendor's here, and Cloud Volumes ONTAP has no direct equivalent in this comparison.
  • You need scale-out beyond a single system's ceiling — up to 330 PB effective capacity across a 24-node cluster is a different order of magnitude from a scale-up architecture.
  • Your estate depends on the surrounding ONTAP ecosystem: SnapLock for regulatory retention, the backup and application integrations, the certified configurations.
  • Your procurement process requires a Gartner Leader, or the organisation's risk appetite requires the largest possible installed base.
  • You operate globally and need service coverage in regions where a European vendor's footprint is thinner.

Virtualisation consolidationBoth serve this well. The differentiator is whether you want per-data-set tuning within one system (STORViX) or the breadth of ONTAP's hypervisor integrations (NetApp).
Multi-cloud data mobilityNetApp's first-party cloud services are ahead here. STORViX runs virtual instances in cloud with a consistent policy model, which is a different proposition from a cloud-provider-managed ONTAP service.

Total cost of ownership

No TCO figure appears here. What appears instead is what would have to be true for a comparison to mean anything.

  • The largest variable is the refresh assumption. A model comparing a 7–10 year lifecycle against a conventional three-year cadence over a ten-year horizon will differ substantially from one comparing first-year purchase price — and both are legitimate views depending on how your organisation funds infrastructure.
  • NetApp offers a 4:1 storage efficiency guarantee on ASA. STORViX publishes customer-reported compression factors of 2× and 3×. These are not measured the same way and should not be compared directly.
  • ONTAP licensing is feature-based; the practical cost depends on which features your estate actually uses. Build the comparison from your feature list, not from a list price.
  • Where ONTAP skills already exist, the training and transition cost of any alternative is real and should appear in the model. It frequently outweighs a hardware line item.
