STORViX AiRE and HPE Storage

HPE's storage strategy has two parts worth separating. The first is Alletra Storage MP: a disaggregated hardware architecture that scales controllers and capacity independently, with different software personalities — B10000 for block, X10000 for object and AI workloads. That is a genuinely elegant piece of engineering. The second is GreenLake, a consumption model spanning compute, networking and storage together. Much of HPE's argument is really the GreenLake argument, and whether it applies to you depends on whether you want an estate-wide as-a-service commitment or a storage platform.

The honest version

When each is the better choice.

Presented with equal weight, because a buyer who has already spoken to the other vendor will notice if it is not.

When STORViX is the better fit

  • You want a storage decision, not an estate-wide commercial model. GreenLake is most compelling when adopted broadly, which is a larger commitment than choosing an array.
  • You prefer to own hardware and keep it in service for 7–10 years rather than consume it as a service indefinitely.
  • Per-data-set configuration matters — different block sizes, encryption and reduction settings for unlike workloads on one system.
  • European supplier jurisdiction and named EU data residency are procurement criteria.
  • You want autonomous operation and predictive capacity forecasting included rather than assembled from a broader platform's services.

When HPE Storage is the better fit

  • You are already committed to GreenLake. Adding storage to an existing consumption agreement is materially simpler than introducing a separate supplier and a separate commercial model.
  • You want compute, networking and storage consumed under one operating and billing model. No storage-only vendor competes with that, and this comparison will not pretend otherwise.
  • Capital expenditure is genuinely unavailable to you and an operational model is the only route to modernising the estate.
  • The disaggregated Alletra Storage MP architecture fits your growth pattern — scaling controllers and capacity independently is a real advantage where those grow at different rates.
  • You need object storage at scale for AI workloads and want it from the same architecture as your block storage, via the X10000 personality.
  • Existing HPE relationships, service coverage or support agreements materially change the economics.

No TCO figure appears here. What appears instead is what would have to be true for a comparison to mean anything.

  • Compare like with like. A GreenLake subscription covering an infrastructure estate and a storage platform purchase are different transactions, and putting them in one table without saying so is misleading.
  • Consumption models are excellent when demand is uncertain and less so when capacity is stable and long-lived. Model your actual growth curve rather than assuming either shape.
  • Over a ten-year horizon, the refresh assumption dominates. State it explicitly in any comparison you build.
  • If GreenLake is already in place across compute and networking, the marginal cost of adding storage to it is not the same as the cost of adopting it — factor that in honestly.
